This Present Moment

The current Lance drama is like something gruesome. I don’t want to look, but I can’t help. I fight the urge to quick on any link pertaining to his current legal woes, before eventually giving in and clicking the link. It takes about two paragraphs before I realize my mistake, and lack of caring before I close the link and move on. I hope to eventually get to the point where I just no longer pay attention. Though I’m sure that I am not the only one who struggles with this. In the end, I don’t care. Eventually, he will be view as a great champion who we know cheated.

He doesn’t have the luck (?) of Pantani, who’s self destructive ways made him a martyr we hold up. No, check that. The beauty of Pantani is that he lost control and brought himself down. Lance is too controlled for that. Lance will go down the way Anquetil has. Great rider, but a doper, but we don’t seem to care so much. Just accept it. Lance’s story will just be minus all the sex stuff. But all of that is generation or so from now. Now we (meaning cycling) are caught up in the death throes of a career.  Rapha is already doing their part to rush this along.

There are some out there who rejoice at the fact that Tex is about to get his. At one point I would have celebrated this, but now I just want it to be over. It seems silly to be arguing over seven years of the tour, where you will have to go almost twenty deep to declare a winner. Lance is the winner of those tours regardless of what the USDA finds or proves. Just like Contador won the last year’s Giro, and the Tour before that. I’m not saying its right, but that this is just the way it is. There are people out there who are going to believe that he was clean no matter how this shakes out. Its like telling an evangelical there is no God.

Glory given six months, one year or even ten years later isn’t glory, its a footnote. How many people really read the footnotes?

What I do care about is that there is racing going on now. Racing that matters more than that which happened in the 1990s, or early 2000s.  There are beautiful wins being had. Time trials to watch, power numbers to geek out over. This is an opportunity for us to bask in the glory and pageantry of the sport we love. But most of all its happening in the moment that matters most. That’s right now.
